Manchester United have successfully appealed against the red card shown to Bruno Fernandes during their 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the FA confirmed on Tuesday, meaning the midfielder will not serve a three-match ban.
The United captain was shown a straight red in the 42nd minute at Old Trafford for what was deemed to be a dangerous challenge on James Maddison by referee Chris Kavanagh.
Fernandes appeared to slip when attempting a tackle in Tottenham’s half — but then raised his foot and caught Maddison on the shin in a studs-up challenge.
The Portugal international complained after the game that the challenge was not deserving of a red card, and the FA confirmed in a statement that his club had filed a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.
The red card shown to Fernandes would have been worthy of a three-game ban owing to the challenge being referred to as serious foul play.
