Workplace stress: Over 45 per cent of employees experience anxiety every Sunday evening – Times of India

A lot is being discussed about workplace anxiety and its impact on the mental health of the employees. Early onset of metabolic diseases, especially those having a damaging effect directly on major organs like heart, has triggered worldwide concern around the health of job holders, especially the young ones.
While many employees recognise the symptoms of mental health issues and take proactive measures against it, many others are unable to even know that their mental peace is suffering due to their job.
A recent survey has found that over 45 per cent of employees experience anxiety and anxiousness every Sunday evening when they prepare to return to work on Monday.
Close to 80% of those who participated opined their organisations could do more to address mental health issues and well-being, according to the report by HR services and workforce solutions provider Genius Consultants, news agency PTI reported.
The survey was carried out between August 5 and September 2, 2024 and more than 1,700 employees participated in it.
Moreover, 78 per cent respondents reported a harsh workplace characterised by peer pressure and behavioural expectations from management and colleagues, it said.
More than 65% of the employees highlighted being overburdened by current work structure. They said work-life balance is severely getting disrupted.

The burden of workplace stress

Workplace pressure is a growing concern in today’s fast-paced professional environment. High expectations, tight deadlines, and increasing workloads create a constant state of stress for employees. When the pressure becomes overwhelming, it can lead to anxiety, burnout, and even depression. Prolonged exposure to stress not only affects productivity but also impairs decision-making abilities and emotional well-being. One may struggle with sleep issues, irritability, and a loss of motivation, further hindering their performance.
Lack of support, unclear job roles, or unhealthy work culture can also affect the mental health of the employees. They may feel isolated or undervalued.

Signs you are burned out

Burnout can manifest itself through signs which are both physical and emotional. Some of the physical signs include frequent exhaustion, headaches, or insomnia. Generally, individuals become easily drained even after getting adequate rest. More so, they may develop frequent illnesses because of an immensely weakened immune system.
The emotional manifestations of burnout can be seen in detachment, irritation, and the feeling of being a failure. The individual might experience low in motivation. Some other aspects that characterize burnout include lowered productivity and an inability to focus. Once such symptoms set in and are not addressed, they can damage the mental health.
