Food is an important part of the travelling experience, and to make it memorable, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has joined hands with Zomato to now deliver food directly to train passengers’ seats. The newly launched practice of Zomato, in collaboration with IRCTC, will enable passengers to receive their favourite meals on their seats straight from the train they are travelling on.This platform is now live in several cities in India and promises to revolutionise options related to railway food.
Over 10 lakh orders already delivered
Aptly named ‘Zomato – Food Delivery in Trains’, the service already marked its presence by delivering over 10 lakh orders at more than 100 railway stations across the country. The Zomato food delivery service available in 88 cities allows a varied choice to relish meals during their journey. Zomato has designed this system to ensure ease and convenience. One can sit on the train and order while it is underway and then get it delivered to one’s coach and seat at a defined station. This seamless integration with IRCTC ensures that passengers no longer have to rely on the rather limited and sometimes subpar food options one gets on the train or at the stations.
Order from your coach or station premises
Another benefit the service has to offer is not just for passengers but for waiting passengers as well. This implies that within station premises, any person who happens to be within them, on the wait for a train or just passing through, can order from the Zomato app and get his favourite food there and then without leaving the station. This new service provides such a diverse range of food options that passengers can now enjoy meals from their favourite restaurants that would otherwise not have been available to them on their journey.
This new service was announced by Deepinder Goyal, its CEO & co-founder, on social media platform X and wrote, “Zomato is now delivering food directly to your compartment at more than 100 railway stations. Thanks to our partnership with IRCTC. We have already delivered over 10 lakh orders on trains. Try it on your next trip!”
Goyal’s declaration reflects a larger strategy by the company to increase its services and offer innovative solutions for various segments of society. The latest launch of train food delivery constitutes another very important aspect of attempts by Zomato to improve the quality of life of its customers, even for them while travelling.
From pilot to nationwide success
This collaboration between Zomato and IRCTC was initiated as a pilot in 2023 at five major railway stations: New Delhi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Varanasi. The significant response to this service and the positive feedback from passengers prompted Zomato to expand the service to the entire country. It is now available at more than 100 major and minor railway stations, including big railway stations like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Goa, Bhopal, and Surat, for passengers.
A game changer in the train travelling domain
For years, passengers have relied on local street vendors and railway station’s meagre food options. Now, with the entry of Zomato in this area, passengers can enjoy fresh food of high restaurant quality, straight to the seat. Such a new service does not only ease travel but also offers the traveller an opportunity to choose from various cuisines and raises the game experience for travelling.
This service, likely a long-time boon for IRCTC and its customers alike, should positively influence both parties involved. For passengers, this ranges from not having to go about the hassle of finding quality food during train travel.
