Heart-Wrenching letter: Grieving mom’s heart-wrenching letter blames toxic culture for daughter’s death | – Times of India

In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old young Chartered Accountant working at a reputed MNC in India died recently because of work stress, the late employee’s mother has claimed. Yes, you read that right! The mother of the deceased has now written a letter to the MNC’s India Chairman, bringing the issue to light and urging for a reform in the stressful work culture.
The late Ms. Anna Sebastian Perayil was a young CA who graduated with distinction in November 2023 and then joined the MNC”s Pune in March 2024. However, the increasing workload and stress with no time to rest and recuperate took a toll on her life. In just four months of her career, Anna was crushed under an intolerable workload and she died on July 20, 2024.
Sharing their plight and how a toxic work culture led to her daughter’s death, Anna Sebastian Perayil’s mother Anita Augustine wrote in the letter, “I am writing this letter as a grieving mother who has lost her precious child, Anna Sebastian Perayil. My heart is heavy, and my soul is shattered as I pen these words, but I believe it is necessary to share our story in the hope that no other family will have to endure the pain we are going through… It was her first job, and she was thrilled to be a part of such a prestigious company. But four years later, on July 20th, 2024, my world collapsed when I received the devastating news that Anna passed away. She was just 26 years old.”
Sharing how Anna was overwhelmed with work and how it adversely affected her health with no time to eat, sleep, rest, or exercise, her mother further shared an incident when they had taken her to a doctor just days before her untimely death. “On Saturday, July 6th, my husband and I reached Pune to attend Anna’s CA Convocation. Since she had been complaining of chest constriction upon reaching her PG late at night (around 1am) for the past week, we took her to the hospital in Pune. Her ECG was normal, and the cardiologist came to allay our fears, telling us she wasn’t getting enough sleep and was eating very late. He prescribed antacids, which assured us it wasn’t anything serious.”
She also wrote that considering the overbearing workload, Anna would often come home late “sometimes collapsing on the bed without even changing her clothes, only to be bombarded with messages asking for more reports… We told her to quit, but she wanted to learn and gain new exposure. However, the overwhelming pressure proved too much even for her.”
In the four-page long letter, Anita Augustine urged the MNC’s India Chairman to bring a change in their work culture and ensure the well-being of its employees.
The shocking news of Anna’s death has stirred up a debate about India’s hustle culture and the need for work-life balance.
However, this is not the first incident when someone has died due to overwhelming work stress. In a similar incident, a 30-year-old Chinese man died after working non-stop for 104 days and with just one day off. In another incident, a delivery driver in China was found dead while he was napping on his bike. The man was 55 years old and he used to work 18 hours every day to earn a living as per reports.
