It would ensure technology-driven transformation of PAN/TAN services for enhanced digital experience of the taxpayers. 

In line with the central government’s flagship programme Digital India, citizens will soon get a new PAN card with a QR code feature as the Centre announced the PAN 2.0 Project of the Income Tax Department.

An e-Governance project for re-engineering the business processes of taxpayer registration services, PAN 2.0 will be an upgrade of the current PAN/TAN 1.0 eco-system consolidating the core and non-core PAN/TAN activities as well as PAN validation service. It would ensure technology-driven transformation of PAN/TAN services for enhanced digital experience of the taxpayers.

The government will spend 1435 crore on the project to provide benefits like ease of access and speedy service delivery with improved quality, single Source of Truth and data consistency, eco-friendly processes and cost optimization and security and optimization of infrastructure for greater agility.

“The existing system will be upgraded and the digital backbone will be brought in a new way… We will try to make it a common business identifier. There will be a unified portal, it will be completely paperless and online. The emphasis will be on the grievance redressal system,” said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a Cabinet briefing on Monday.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said there is no need to change PAN number.

Yes, you will get a new PAN card.

As per Vaishnaw, the new card will be enabled with features like QR code.

4. Do you need to pay for PAN upgradation?

Ashwini said that upgradation of PAN will be free of cost and it will be delivered to you.

78 crore PANs have been issued so far and 98% of them were individuals.

Explaining benefits of PAN 2.0, Vaishnaw said, “Grievance redressal system is being updated. For protection of data, PAN data Vault System is being set-up. With a unified portal, there will be no need to go to other portals.”
